Lettered edge is the edge of a coin that displays design elements or an inscription rather than having a plain or reeded edge. The elements can be raised or recessed below the surface.
The design elements, like letters or emblems, on the edge of a coin are called Edge Device.
In some cases clipping or shaving of precious metals from a coin with a lettered edge would be obvious.
