Description
1901 – AUB’s Main Gate has welcomed generations of students to the University, irrespective of race, creed, or national origin, and throughout all circumstances. The University’s motto “That they may have life and have it more abundantly” is etched on both facades. Designed by New York architect Edward Pearce Casey, who worked on Washington’s Library of Congress, it was first known as the Gate House, which housed the President's Office as well as a reception and business room for visitors, the treasurer’s and the gateman’s offices, and later the offices of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the general secretary of the Alumni Association. Its restoration in 2015 was the first phase of AUB’s 150th anniversary celebrations. Today, it houses the protection offices, AUB’s Workers and Staff Syndicate, and the Visitors Bureau.
The Main Gate was backdrop to many scenes of AUB’s eventful history; the Olympic Torch passed by on the way to Tokyo in 1964, it watched over waves of passing student demonstrations and political protests through the years, and it was a stop for the tramway from 1909 to the 1960s.
